Six Core Needs and Our Wardrobe

How Do these Core Needs Affect our Decision Making

At our Life Coaching Course this weekend we went into the Six Core Needs and how they affect how we make decisions.  This got me thinking about how we make our wardrobe choices.

I figured as with choosing what to eat for dinner day to day and week to week wardrobe choices can depend largely on how your core needs are balanced.

The two core needs which are more spiritual “Growth and Contribution” may affect the way we choose our clothes.  If  we want to improve our style of dressing and grow our sense of style.  Maybe constantly learning new makeup techniques and exploring tips and tricks can relate to “Growth”.  “Contribution” may change how our wardrobe is split up with the clothes that we wear when say, contributing to charity events.  Also when we are sorting our wardrobe whether we make a conscious effort to donate to charity or give to friends and family.

The core needs of “Significance” and “Connection”  may be to do with whether we like to “dress to impress” or dress to build rapport and “connection” with our peers.

The core needs of “Certainty” and  “Variety” –  depending on how those needs are weighted for an individual may determine whether they dress according to their mood at the time or whether they plan ahead.  People who like “certainty” would feel panicked if they did not have every item sorted prior to attending an important event.  They may love dressing in a uniform.  Someone who favours “variety” may love the spontaneity of  creating an outfit at short notice.  As well as a variety of clothing combinations they may like a variety of choice each day rather than have that certainty of knowing what to wear.

We all have differing levels of these core needs and there are some which are inbuilt and some which are consciously developed.

Do you like certainty or variety?  Do you like significance and to be noticed or to slip under the radar quite often?  Do you thrive on connection or prefer time alone?

I have discovered that I love the variety – wondering if you have ever worked out which core needs are most important to you?

We are all different and so much can determine how we make choices and decisions:

    • Culture
    • Genes
    • Upbringing
    • Education
    • Beliefs
    • Religion
    • Core Beliefs
    • Gender
    • Experiences
    • Financial circumstances
    • Relationships
    • Status
    • Career
    • Lifestyle

  • Avoid the Stress When Getting Dressed

Avoid the Stress When Getting Dressed

Stress When Getting Dressed can Affect Our Health, Social life and whole Day!

Would you agree?  Can you relate to this?  I have heard of at least two women who have been so stressed that they have turned down social occasions because they just knew they wouldn’t be able to decide what to wear. Imagine being able to enjoy getting dressed to go out and being able to get dressed quickly so that you can walk out the door feeling confident and showing your own style.

Before having children which was a long time ago I used to change quite a few times before going out anywhere.  I had that luxury and even if it was going to work in the morning being a true Libra Star Sign I would want everything perfect and could never make up my mind.  Once the children came along that soon changed.  Dress quick – that was it!

Now the children have grown up and I have so many other activities that I love to spend my time on again I don’t have the time or inclination to spend ages deciding what to wear.  As well as the time factor who wants all those piles of clothes to put away?  How cool to be able to look at the weather, think of the occasion you are dressing for sports, work, social, formal and then just get dressed knowing that whatever you put on will be just right for you.

You can avoid that last minute stress and piles of clothes to put away by:

    1. Knowing your most flattering colours and styles
    2. Only having in your wardrobe clothing and accessories that fit your own style recipe and colour palette
    3. Once you have your colour palette sorted you will know that your clothing is always going to be the right colour for your skintone, hair and eye colour AND look good with other accessories you own
    4. Make sure that all your clothing is a great fit for your body shape and the size that you are now.  Feeling comfortable in your clothing is important no matter what you are doing.
    5. If you have the space you can split your clothing into sections to cater for  different aspects to your life – Hobbies, Sports, Work, Meetings, Family Outings, Socialising
    6. If you are the sort of person who likes to be prepared well before an event ensure you have the outfit ready ahead of time to get dressed into.  Some people even plan their outfits for the following week no matter what their itinerary is.  I am writing about this in a subsequent post.
    7. Ensure you are getting dressed for you with regard to your own style, personality, colours and comfort however also  take  into account the occasion.
    8. Consideration for others when you dress is not about fitting in with everyone else.  It is about consciously dressing so that you can reflect who you are to the world and show respect for other people.
    9. Last but not least Number 9 – Get dressed and leave on time.  Know that you look great, you feel great and you don’t need to second guess that choice of clothing. If you are dressed as YOU, wearing YOUR colours and style, in comfortable clothing suitable for the occasion you are going to you can’t go wrong.

  • Inside Out

    Inside Out

    … Or Outside In

I am reading a great  book on personal style at the moment by Carla Mason Mathis and Helen Villa Connor which is  also as they describe it .. “a natural guidebook to self-acceptance”.

“…its impossible to build a true individual style without learning to love yourself on the outside as well as the inside” (quote from the book “The Triumph of Individual Style“)

One of the latest movies Inside Out – an animated movie dealing with feelings is just one of the examples of how many people today are focusing on how we feel, how we take care of our emotions and think about situations.  I believe this is so important and it is wonderful that we are encouraged to be more open about  how we feel.

As with everything in life, balance is something that creates harmony.  The balance of looking after ourselves on the inside AND the outside makes sense.

We can look at this both ways – being the best we can from the outside in and  from the inside out.

Taking care of how we think and our self-talk is going to have a positive impact on how we feel.  This will show in our outer appearance.  Our eyes shine, we smile more, our language that comes out of our mouth will be more positive and inspiring  for other people to hear.  If we take care of our inner health, think about what we put into our bodies and exercise we will feel better, have healthier skin, eyes, hair and physiques which shows on the outside.

If we pay attention to our skin with our grooming – a good skincare routine, quality makeup plus wear good clothing styles for our body shape, wear colours that suit us and are in harmony with our skintone, hair and eyes we will feel good on the inside …

    • We know that we look good, so we feel good
    • We feel congruent with our personality by wearing colours that we like and styles that suit
    • We feel peaceful because we are comfortable in our clothes and not always worrying that a skirt or trousers are too tight, too loose or uncomfortable
    • We will receive compliments instead of people asking if we are tired or not well (which can happen if you are wearing the wrong colours for you personally)
    • We are able to concentrate on whatever activity we are doing at the time because we know the “outside” is taken care of
    • We can feel excitement about an impending trip or event because we know that we can put together outfits from our wardrobe that will be work for us

So … Outside In or Inside Out  … It all works.  If we look good, we feel good and if we feel good we look good… BALANCE and HARMONY.

  • Using Your Colour Swatch

    Using Your Colour Swatch

Explore and Discover Your Colour Options

Wow what fun you can have using your colour swatch!  I recently pulled out a dress that I hadnt worn simply because I was not used to wearing those colours and kept bypassing it.   I took a good look at the dress with my colour swatch and realised Yes! it is in my colour swatch and it does look good on me – even more so with a bit of red lipstick. This neutral is a great alternative to black.

Do you find that you are wearing a lot of the same colour all the time?  Try exploring the colours in your swatch.  There may be colours in your colour swatch that you had not even thought of wearing Be adventurous now that you have had a colour consultation and have your colour swatch.  Remember your colour swatch is a tool and a guide that can save your hundreds of dollars.

Take your swatch to your wardrobe or with you to the shops and ask yourself …

    • Does the colour of the garment blend in with the swatch?
    • Is it the same level of lightness or darkness?
    • Is it warm or is it cool?
    • Is it clear or muted compared to the swatch?
    • If you fan the swatch out do all the rest of the colours in the swatch kind of “go” with the colour in the garment you are looking at?

Your wardrobe will be so much more  versatile with the ability to mix and match if you use your swatch.  Try the following to “tweak” your wardrobe using your colour swatch

    • Try finding colours of similar  colour value and wearing them together such as a light pink with a light blue or a a medium yellow with a medium purple; or you could try putting a few of the richer colours in your swatch together   If they are in your swatch each colour will be right for you.  You can be confident of this.
    • Try putting one of your signature colours (which will be marked on your swatch) in a garment which will be worn near your face with a nice dark neutral – the darkest in your swatch as this will really highlight your face and make the signature colour stand out.

Have fun and discover some new ideas by using your swatch.  By using YOUR colour swatch you  know that you cant go wrong.

Contact Moana Robinson of Beauty Glow to find out your colour palette . A full Colour consultation takes 1.5 to 2 hours and you receive

  • Changes in Lifestyle

    Changes in Lifestyle

How Have you Changed Over the Years?

Lifestyle changes may mean you have put on  weight and/or your skin may have become dull.   It is always helpful to have the support and encouragement of someone who has your best interests at heart.  Enlisting an expert can help you cope with changes to your lifestyle.

Style and Clothing – Fashion and style can become stressful if you dont know where to start.  Here ere are a couple of tips:

    1. As you go to put something on in your wardrobe if it doesnt “rock your boat” put it aside – Your personal stylist can help you work out why it is you always bypass this item of clothing.
    2. Choose some favourite pieces and keep them in your wardrobe.   Is there a common theme with these clothes? Do they work for your current lifestyle?
    3. A personal stylist can give you ideas on how to wear those favourite clothes. They can help you work out why they are your favourites. By making changes you can feel as though you have a whole new wardrobe.
    4. Experiment with your clothes, try  some mixing and matching, try different colours, see what is trending these days and most importantly what is  comfortable and “feels right”.
    5. Even in countries where changes in seasons are not very distinct it is nice to have seasonal changes in your wardrobe – usually  bright colours in summer and more subdued, subtle colours for winter depending on your colour palette.
    6. Innerwear is as important as outerwear.  Determine your right size and have a professional fitting.  Changes to your lingerie can also make a difference to your whole look.  Just like the foundation for a house, if our foundation garments are good it creates a much better shape.

Makeup and Accessories – Makeup enhances natural beauty and is a way to express yourself. Eyeliner and/or a quality mascara and a bold lipstick that matches well with your skin tone is one way to make changes to your look.

Accessories from bags to foot wear, necklaces, bracelets and earrings help you to achieve a stylish look to go with the changes in your lifestyle.

Skincare – Not all individuals have the same type of skin, some have oily skin and others can have dry, sensitive or normal skin A product range that works for you will be individual and this is why it is good to have a range that you can “try before you buy”.  Not every range suits every person and this is a personal choice.  Ask the advice of a Beauty Therapist. Skin changes as we age and as well as skin types there are different skin conditions to cope with.   If you are trying a product out give the range at least 28 days for skincare to work as our skin renews every 28 days.

  • Your Wardrobe of Choice …

    Your Wardrobe of Choice …

    Just Imagine

Going away on holiday we don’t pack any clothing or accessories we feel may be superfluous to our needs – That would waste space and weigh us down. Who would ever want to pay excess baggage charges on the way TO our destination especially!

The garments hanging in our holiday wardrobe are what we feel good in, what we look good in, are our most comfortable and suitable for whatever occasions we  plan to attend while away.

Opening the wardrobe door while away on holiday and choosing what to wear is so simple. Done!    Now … What fun activity are we going to do today with our family and friends?

While on holiday we live in the present and take so much notice of what is happening right at that moment. Holidays are temporary so we tend to appreciate every single day, focus on what we are doing and treasure the days because they will be finishing soon.  Time is not wasted thinking about past frustrations and worrying about possible future problems. What a great feeling living in the present moment is.

Most of us are lucky enough to have choice in our day to day life to a certain extent.  Just think for a moment though about maybe making that choice to have only what we want, what is comfortable for us and what is good for our lifestyle right now.  This way we eliminate what doesnt work and we are free to also make a choice to live in and appreciate the present moment without the clutter of the superfluous.

Just as we can make New Year goals we can create our wardrobe of choice halfway through the year or even at the beginning of every month, week, or day.

Having a wardrobe of choice whether you are on holiday or at home is all about wearing what is right for you and only having what is right for you with you. Guidance with your style and colours that suit you best can help with this wardrobe of choice. You would be surprised at how liberating it can be to review and refocus what you want in your wardrobe right now – Is it the same as what you wanted in your wardrobe at the beginning of the year? or last month? Choice is a wonderful, powerful word and your own personal wardrobe is an example of how you can exercise that power of choice. Sometimes you can have too much going on to even know what that choice might be. Narrowing that choice is going to give you that same feeling as opening that holiday wardrobe door – knowing that you only have in your wardrobe what looks good, feels good, serves a purpose and is comfortable for YOUR life.

  • Bringing Life to Your Wardrobe

    Bringing Life to Your Wardrobe

    Wardrobe Clutter

Is your wardrobe out of control? Unsure of what suits you best? Can’t decide what to wear every morning? Always shopping, but still you don’t have the right items to wear? Then probably it’s time to sort your wardrobe from scratch. We all know that our wardrobes can become extremely cluttered with clothes and accessories that can be years and years old. The one stop solution to this problem is having an Image Consultant in for an audit or makeover of your closet. The Image Consultant will use their knowledge to help you achieve a clean and well organized wardrobe.

    Tip #1 Organize

Take everything out of your wardrobe and sort your clothes into a few piles such as clothes frequently in use, infrequently used, out of season, need some alterations or to donate charity. It might be not easy to do this but sorting out unused clothes is essential to make room in your wardrobe.  A good idea is to then have three baskets handy  labelled (1) Ditch (2) Donate (3) Darn (mending or alterations)

Tip #2 Pull out your greatest hits

Once your wardrobe is organized, pick out styles that you know suit you best and will flatter your shape and colouring. Once you have identified your greatest hits line them up neatly in your closet.  If you are unsure whether they do suit you this is where an Image Consultant can give you an honest, unbiased and  professional opinion.

    Tip #3 Save Your Money

Resist the urge to go shopping. Rather than buying new clothes straight away it is a great idea to enlist the services of an Image Consultant to help compile a list to fill any gaps left tn your wardrobe. The Image Consutlant will take into account your lifestyle and style personality. The wardrobe should be a place you can go to and instantly pick out something to wear for any occasion. If you rush into buying more new clothes you could end up with clutter again with incorrect choices being made. Your Image Consultant can even come shopping with you once that list is made.

The personal Image Consultant knows how to perfectly organize every wardrobe. Whether you are a woman who is overwhelmed with the amount of clothes you own or who has retired and needs a wardrobe to match a new lifestyle, a woman who wants a post-pregnancy revamp or a woman who is returning to the workforce after being a stay at home Mum for many years.

For a well-maintained and orderly wardrobe, your personal Image Consultant will assess you and your lifestyle then get you to try on few items explaining which ones will look good and which maybe don’t suit you. Having a wardrobe makeover can definately save your time and money and also save you from making the same mistakes that you made previously. Clearing out your wardrobe can be like a breath of fresh air into a big part of your life.

  • Spice Up Your Black Wardrobe

    Spice Up Your Black Wardrobe

ARE YOU TRYING TO EASE OUT OF THE “EVERYTHING IN MY WARDROBE IS BLACK” SYNDROME?

Sometimes when we don’t know what to wear to work it is just easiest to have that all black outfit or suit as it seems to look smart and professional, keeps clean longer and is just… well, practical.

I used to work in a legal office and remember one of my daughters asking whether my uniform was to wear black clothes. It wasnt a unitform it was just easy and felt smart and professional.  If you have the right colouring black can look amazing but it can also become boring and uninspiring. I said at a recent talk at a gym how everyone would feel if they walked in and EVERYONE was wearing black outfits and all the equipment was black? How motivating would that be for anyone wanting to put their all into a workout ?…not very! This is why energetic colours are bright colours.

A way to put more energy and vibrance also into the workplace is to introduce colour that suits your skintone and still looks professional. You can easily expand your “all black” wardrobe and even create some new wardrobe capsules is to utilise your black staples of skirts, trousers  and jackets with a new seasonal colour which will update your wardrobe. Add a colourful jacket or scarf and other accessories in any of the latest colours as a feature. Be careful to not “feature” too many items at once – either have an overall look of black with subtle touches of colour or feature a scarf  or necklace in the contrast colour.

To really be on trend and fashionable for Autumn 2015 you could add Lucite Green or Marsala touches to your working corporate wardrobe or the very latest colour “Spiced Pumpkin” which ties in perfectly with the upcoming Modern Seventies Trend.

Spiced Pumpkin would look amazing with black as it is high contrast for those who suit high contrast and can be adapted to suit depending on your own preference. If you are someone who cannot wear orange definitely keep this away from your face but you may want to just add a touch of spiced orange for fun – The best way is to have a slight black pattern on your orange garment if it is a skirt or top to tie in to the black staple jacket or pants. Choose a colour and accessorise your black. Even in a corporate environment people want to see a bit of colour.
Contact Moana at Beauty Glow to discuss Styles Colour and spicing up your Work  Wardrobe or even your non work wardrobe
