  • Long Haul Travel in Comfort

    Long Haul Travel in Comfort

Can you Travel in Comfort AND Style?

Comfort YES its a must!  Yes to  comfort AND style.   I class long haul as anything over 9 hours.  Sitting on a plane for a long time can be challenging.  My tips for stylish travel with comfort are as follows (especially for those 15 or 23 hour flights):

    • Keep it casual – If you are being met at the other end by a business associate “smart casual” can still be achieved by wearing co-ordinating comfortable clothes and taking a jacket for when you reach your destination.
    • To function efficiently after most long haul flights you may hopefully have allowed time to rest and change before going to your meetings
    • Leggings and tops are great for travel, layered with an easily removable shirt or jacket
    •  Garments made from  fabric which is breathable for comfort and wrinkle resistant for style such as cotton polyester blends are best
    • Cooler tops underneath are good in case there is a delay until take off and the air-conditioning can quite often fluctuate during this time
    • The outer layer (jacket/cardigan/coat) if soft is good to use as extra padding when snoozing on the plane
    • Shoes need to be comfortable for standing in queues at customs and easily removable.  Make sure they are not shoes that will not “give” if your feet tend to swell during a flight
    • Moisturisers and lip balms are a great idea and the least amount of makeup possible.   The airconditioning on planes is exremely drying.  Your skin needs hydration.  Arbonne Regenerating Toner is a good spray mist during long flights. Arbonne Rejuvenating Cream with its emollient properties is great as a moisturiser on top to combat that drying air.
    • Keep jewellery simple.  Scarves are great for a bit of colour  and – again for comfort.  Bulky beads and earrings are not good for napping in.  Bangles in gold or silver or other materials such as plastic or natural are best.  It is a hassle taking metallic jewellery off when going through the metal detectors.
    • Take a pair of socks on the plane to change into
    • Lots of meals come to you on the long flights and it is best to try to avoid the carbs, sugars and alcohol if you suffer after long flights.  The airlines are really good lately about constantly offering water and it is always good to take advantage of this – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
    • Think about colours you wear on the plane –  No matter how clean the plane is 400+ people onboard each  747 flight and 800+ on an A380  in such a confined space light colours are just not practical
    • Neutrals are best anyway for travelling for space economy and mixing and matching – For ideas on packing for travel see the article on No Stress Travelling in Style
    • As a hint for any spills or marks soda water is good for spot removals
    • Keep your hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, lipstick, mini spray deodorant and purse sized handcream handy for a freshen up before landing (Remember any gloss or toothpaste or other liquids or gels will need to be under 100ml)
    • Economy Comfort:  If you are lucky enough to travel Business or First Class the lie back seats are wonderful.  A comfort tip for Economy is to always have a sturdy bag that  can stow under the seat in front and  pull it out during a long flight to use as a footrest.

All the best for your trip whether for business or pleasure or both – Happy travels in comfort AND style!

  • What Will You Wear to Your Next Job Interview?

What Will You Wear to Your Next Job Interview?

You Really DO Need to Dress to Impress

A job interview is one of those occasions when you will want to put a lot of effort into how you present yourself.  Dress appropriately for the position you are going for and this will give you a head start to create that all important first impression.

Here are a few tips to ensure you are going to look good and feel good for your interview.  Use this as a guideline to ensure you have thought of everything when it comes to presentation.

    • Dress conservatively.  You can still show your personality by wearing colours that suit you
    • Concentrate mainly on neutrals with splashes of your good colours  in ties, shirts, shoes, belts, jewellery
    • Wearing a suit to an interview is a safe option.  A dark coloured suit with a light coloured shirt is a good combination
    • You are  always best, especially at a first interview,  to dress up (in a professional sense) rather than dress down.
    • Classic suit styles are best with co-ordinating socks and dress shoes for men
    • Your suit or outfit should be comfortable and fit you well – See The Perfect Fit for Garments
    • Avoid loud colours and super bright ties
    • Clothing should be neat, clean and pressed.
    • Avoid anything that is  bright, sheer or showing too much flesh/cleavage
    •  Skirts shouldn’t be too short – knee length is best
    • Another good rule of thumb is to dress as though you are your boss
    • Be careful with perfumes, colognes/aftershave as you don’t want it to be overpowering or cause an allergic reaction.
    • Be particular with hygiene –  showering, shaving, teeth brushed and don’t smoke or eat just before an interview
    • Hair clean and tidy
    • Men with moustaches or beards ensure they are neatly trimmed
    • Keep jewellery simple
    • Shoes polished, medium heels and ensure they aren’t scuffed or in need of repair
    • Court shoes or pumps for women are the best option
    • Hosiery without any snags or ladders and in neutral colours.  Have a spare pair just in case
    • Nails clean and tidy – avoid artistic manicures if you are going for a professional job.  These can look great and as with all expressions of personal style are fun and a great way to show your personality.  For a job interview neutral nails will always going to be the most suitable look.
    • Makeup understated and suited to your colouring.  If you are not sure of what sort of makeup to wear for an interview book a consultation with your makeup artist or stylist who can show you the best foundation colours to suit your skintone.  Makeup for the professional workplace should be minimal and flattering.

If you take the time to attend to these details and check everything off you will feel well put together and more confident about the interview .. There is just one last thing to remember before you walk out that door …

  • The Perfect Fit for Garments

    The Perfect Fit for Garments

    Do Your Garments Fit Perfectly?

No matter whether you are dressing casually or for a special occasion it is important to ensure your clothes are the right fit for your body.

Here are a few tips for you to ensure each of your garments is the right fit for you.  It is always handy to have someone (or you can do it yourself) measure your body accurately so that you know the fit according to measurement charts if shopping online.  It is always good to ensure a company has a return policy when shopping online in case the garment is an incorrect fit.  Different stores and brands will also vary in label sizes so a try on session is always worthwhile if you want to ensure the fit is right.

    Your Perfect Fit Checklist

    Jackets

    • Do not pull across the shoulders
    • The lapels lie flat
    • You should be able to slide a flat hand inside your jacket under the lapels
    • The vents do not pull open
    • The sleeves finish just on or a centimetre below your waist
    • You are able to cross your arms across your body
    • You are able to button it up without pulling
    • The jacket’s second button from the bottom should lie just above your belly-button, never below
    • With your arms at your sides, the sleeves should cover the wrist bone
    • If a jacket doesn’t fit your shape properly and flares out at the bottom part this means the jacket fit is too slim
    • Length of a suit jacket should finish just where the curve of the buttock starts to go inwards or.. where the middle of the hand is if arms are relaxed at the side.  This would be just past where the fingers start below the palm

    Shirts

    • Fit your neck properly when done up.  You should be able to fit two fingers in between the neck and the collar
    • If turning your head causes you to turn the collar also then your collar is too tight
    • Sleeves finish around 1cm below your jacket sleeve
    • Cuffs should be a bit looser than a good fitting watch and should end just where your palm starts
    • Your cuff should not move more than an inch up your wrist when you bend your arm
    • Buttons do not gape open
    • The shoulder seam should be at your shoulder bone
    • Armhole seams should not be too tight
    • You should be able to bend without your shirt becoming untucked
    • You should be able to put your hands behind your head comfortably
    • Sleeves on mens shirts should not be so loose that they “billow” when moving the arms

    Pants

    • Only one break at the hem
    • The pleats lie flat against your body
    • You can fit two fingers between your body and the waistband
    • Does not pull across the front creating a crease at your hips
    • Dress trousers should not be tight to the leg nor billowing they should drape the leg comfortably
    • Avoid pleats in the front as they can make you appear heavier.
    • Trousers should have a single defined crease down the center of each pant leg.
    • If you have pants with side pockets that don’t sit right – sometimes they gape when sitting it is easy to have the pockets removed.  A dressmaker or dry cleaners who offer an alteration service can do this easily.  See article on alterations This will create a smoother silhouette.
    • Length of pants is important 2.5cm off the floor if you want to show your shoe a little or or a hem that’s a 6mm off the floor for floor-skimming styles, like wide-leg trousers – again, another easy job for someone who does alterations.

    Skirts

    • You can fit two fingers at the waistband
    • The splits remain closed except when walking (for a skirt with a split)
    • The right length (not too short for modesty and suitability reasons and not too long for body shape/fashion)
    • You can sit down comfortably without risk of the skirt splitting
    • All linings are hidden
    • Hangs straight down from your behind

    Dresses

    • Not too tight
    • Does not reveal too much cleavage
    • Sleeveless dresses do not have flesh oozing from under the armhole
    • No shorter than 2.5cm above the knee

So much of a garment’s fit and length is also to do with your personal body proportions and shape.

During a Wardrobe Audit your Personal Stylist can help with advice on the fit of all your garments that you are not sure about.  For all Style consultations contact Moana Robinson at Beauty Glow

  • Sew Excited – Alterations Can Create a whole new Look

Sew Excited – Alterations Can Create a whole new Look

Take Up – Take In – Take Down – Add or Trim

Are you going through your wardrobe and doing a spring clean?  Do you sew?  If not most dry cleaners can do minor alterations which may completely change the look of a garment.

I always say to women who are trying to lose weight that its so good to look and feel the best they can every single day.  How many times do you hear women say “when I get to my goal weight I will get myself something new” or “treat myself to a new outfit”.?   Alterations to a garment or outfit that is a fantastic colour and style for you mean that you can “adjust as you go”.

There are so many alterations that can make a quite inexpensive outfit look fantastic.  Below are a few tips on how alterations can make a difference to your life and your wardrobe

    • Sometimes you can buy “off the rack” clothes  on sale .. maybe not your size and just have them altered to look amazing.  Even with the cost of alterations you can literally save hundreds of dollars by making the most of clearance sales with odd sizes left.
    • If you love a dress for its style and colour and want a really “perfect” fit sometimes it is even works to buy  a size bigger to have a dressmaker make alterations personal to  your shape.
    • If you are having denim jeans altered it does pay to have this done professionally so that they can match the stitching correctly.
    • If you are looking for a regular dressmaker or tailor give them a simple alteration to do first to see how they go for time and quality of work.  This applies especially to expensive garments.  You dont want to risk having a lovely pair of pants taken up too short in length.
    • It is definitely worthwhile spending the time to find a good dressmaker or alterations person.  Develop a good communication with them and as with most businesses if you are a loyal and good customer they will usually be very obliging if you want something altered quickly for a special event.  Communication is very important as you need to convey to them exactly what you want and ensure that you are happy with the fitting before the alterations are done.
    • When you go for the alteration fitting ensure that you wear the other garments that you would wear with the garment to be altered and the same shoes especially if it is for a hem.  This applies to undergarments as well as a different bra under a top or dress can create a different look to something especially if it is quite fitted.  If you are having a coat  or jacket altered wear the thickest layer that you may be wearing underneath it to allow for layering.
    • If you are buying an outfit in a quality department store or boutique which needs some alteration it pays to ask whether they have a recommended dressmaker or alterations person as this will be someone who is trusted by that retailer to provide good quality service.
    • I have said before when talking about wardrobe spring cleans to have your baskets or bags for Donate, Dump or Darn.  The “darn” basket to me means alter as well as repair.  A dress or skirt can go from looking dowdy or frumpy if the incorrect length to very flattering with some centimetres taken off the hem.
    • Alterations such as hems, side seams, adding darts or tucks, altering sleeves, replacing zips or fasteners can be relatively inexpensive but some fiddly alterations to jackets, coats etc can be a bit more time consuming and costly.
    • If your time is better spent elsewhere  do not feel guilty about having these alterations done even if you can sew.  Alterations can save you so much money if you take into account the cost per wear of a garment that may not have otherwise been worn much at all because it didn’t fit correctly.

  • Inside Out

    Inside Out

    … Or Outside In

I am reading a great  book on personal style at the moment by Carla Mason Mathis and Helen Villa Connor which is  also as they describe it .. “a natural guidebook to self-acceptance”.

“…its impossible to build a true individual style without learning to love yourself on the outside as well as the inside” (quote from the book “The Triumph of Individual Style“)

One of the latest movies Inside Out – an animated movie dealing with feelings is just one of the examples of how many people today are focusing on how we feel, how we take care of our emotions and think about situations.  I believe this is so important and it is wonderful that we are encouraged to be more open about  how we feel.

As with everything in life, balance is something that creates harmony.  The balance of looking after ourselves on the inside AND the outside makes sense.

We can look at this both ways – being the best we can from the outside in and  from the inside out.

Taking care of how we think and our self-talk is going to have a positive impact on how we feel.  This will show in our outer appearance.  Our eyes shine, we smile more, our language that comes out of our mouth will be more positive and inspiring  for other people to hear.  If we take care of our inner health, think about what we put into our bodies and exercise we will feel better, have healthier skin, eyes, hair and physiques which shows on the outside.

If we pay attention to our skin with our grooming – a good skincare routine, quality makeup plus wear good clothing styles for our body shape, wear colours that suit us and are in harmony with our skintone, hair and eyes we will feel good on the inside …

    • We know that we look good, so we feel good
    • We feel congruent with our personality by wearing colours that we like and styles that suit
    • We feel peaceful because we are comfortable in our clothes and not always worrying that a skirt or trousers are too tight, too loose or uncomfortable
    • We will receive compliments instead of people asking if we are tired or not well (which can happen if you are wearing the wrong colours for you personally)
    • We are able to concentrate on whatever activity we are doing at the time because we know the “outside” is taken care of
    • We can feel excitement about an impending trip or event because we know that we can put together outfits from our wardrobe that will be work for us

So … Outside In or Inside Out  … It all works.  If we look good, we feel good and if we feel good we look good… BALANCE and HARMONY.

  • Common Scents about Perfume

    Common Scents about Perfume

Perfume is such a Personal Choice

Some of us who love perfume do have a signature scent …A perfume  they like to wear to reflect their personality and can even become part of their own personal brand.

I find that most women either

    (a) Stick to one or two  “signature scents” with their perfume; or

    (b) Like to try a variety of different perfumes

Sometimes the perfume you choose to wear can depend on what you are doing that day for example …

Weekend daytime – Sports, Market Shopping, Running around with the kids something light and fresh  such as Burberry Brit or Gucci Flora or Dolce & Gabban Light Blue

Everyday workwear Perfume –  Something with vitality and energy …Chance by Chanel or Miracle by Lancome or Dior Addict.

Romantic/Date Nights – Something sensual and sexy like Gucci by Gucci or Lola by Marc Jacobs or feminine and floral like Romance by Ralph Lauren or Innocent by Thierry Mugler

Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette?

Eau de Toilette is less concentrated and contains more water than eau de parfum which contains more alcohol.  If you want your fragrance to last from day through to night choose eau de parfum (which is more expensive because of its concentration).  You need to use a lot less of eau de parfum than eau de toilette

    Perfume Points to Remember

    • The general rule is 2-3 sprays of perfume – enough to notice but not too much so that you knock out your friends and co-workers
    • Only spray perfume where your skin wont be exposed to the sun otherwise it could cause hyperpigmentation
    • Wrists, behind your ears and behind your knees are pulse points and good areas to wear your perfume
    • If you wear the same perfume for a long time. day after day, your body gets used to that scent and you will find that it mixes with your own body chemistry
    • Get to know the type of scents you like – such as  woody, floral, fruity, spicy, and citrus.  This way when you are looking for a new scent to try if you are getting some assistance from the store you have a starting point.
    • I always wait after trying a new perfume on my wrist and see how it smells after it has been on a while before I purchase it.  I prefer trying it on my wrist to the tester strip as each scent reacts differently on different people
    • When spraying hold the bottle eight to ten inches away from you.
    • Only ever try three fragrances in one go as your olfactory senses can easily become overloaded.  Most perfume stores provide glasses of coffee beans to sniff to prevent this from happening
    • Store perfume away from heat, humidity and direct light or the oils and alcohol in perfume can break down and change the fragrance or cause it to disappear completely.

  • Using Your Colour Swatch

    Using Your Colour Swatch

Explore and Discover Your Colour Options

Wow what fun you can have using your colour swatch!  I recently pulled out a dress that I hadnt worn simply because I was not used to wearing those colours and kept bypassing it.   I took a good look at the dress with my colour swatch and realised Yes! it is in my colour swatch and it does look good on me – even more so with a bit of red lipstick. This neutral is a great alternative to black.

Do you find that you are wearing a lot of the same colour all the time?  Try exploring the colours in your swatch.  There may be colours in your colour swatch that you had not even thought of wearing Be adventurous now that you have had a colour consultation and have your colour swatch.  Remember your colour swatch is a tool and a guide that can save your hundreds of dollars.

Take your swatch to your wardrobe or with you to the shops and ask yourself …

    • Does the colour of the garment blend in with the swatch?
    • Is it the same level of lightness or darkness?
    • Is it warm or is it cool?
    • Is it clear or muted compared to the swatch?
    • If you fan the swatch out do all the rest of the colours in the swatch kind of “go” with the colour in the garment you are looking at?

Your wardrobe will be so much more  versatile with the ability to mix and match if you use your swatch.  Try the following to “tweak” your wardrobe using your colour swatch

    • Try finding colours of similar  colour value and wearing them together such as a light pink with a light blue or a a medium yellow with a medium purple; or you could try putting a few of the richer colours in your swatch together   If they are in your swatch each colour will be right for you.  You can be confident of this.
    • Try putting one of your signature colours (which will be marked on your swatch) in a garment which will be worn near your face with a nice dark neutral – the darkest in your swatch as this will really highlight your face and make the signature colour stand out.

Have fun and discover some new ideas by using your swatch.  By using YOUR colour swatch you  know that you cant go wrong.

Contact Moana Robinson of Beauty Glow to find out your colour palette . A full Colour consultation takes 1.5 to 2 hours and you receive

    • Your personal colour swatch with your signature colours highlighted
    • Your personal booklet guide filled with information about your colours
    • The opportunity to ask questions and receive information that is personal to YOU

  • One Size Fits All

    One Size Fits All

    … or Does It ?

Have you  seen a pair of jeans that will fit a Size 6 AND a Size 16 ?

     NO …

It is the same with styling consultations.  There is not a “One Size Fits All” recipe for looking great.  This is why a personal styling session is so important.  EACH individual person is so unique.  I am using jeans as an example because these days walking into a jeans shop to buy a pair of jeans means more than knowing your correct size.    As well as Size there is Type of jean – Rise, Cut and Colour (or type of Wash) – Here is some information for you about choosing jeans:

    Rise

The rise is measured from the middle of the crotch seam to the top of the waistband and can create your perceived waistline

    • Low Rise – Sitting a few inches below the navel (Best for women with long legs), great for women with a “boyish” figure or straight up and down figure (“I” shape)
    • High Rise –  Sitting just above the navel (Best for Pear or “A” shaped women) For petite builds this fit also accentuates the waits and elongates the legs, good for women with bigger hips
    • Mid Rise – Sitting just below the navel (Good for women with long legs) also good for women with bigger hips

    Cut or Style

    • Skinny Jean – Suits most shapes apart from Apple or “O” shapes
    • Bootcut Jean – Probably the most flattering cut for everyone, depending on the shoe you are wearing. designed to kick out at the bottom and are quite fitted at the top
    • Flared Jeans – Flattering on round or “O” shapes (however they will shorten your legs)
    • Straight Leg Jeans – Look good on most body shapes; and then there are the …
    • Boyfriend Jeans – usually quite loose and look best on “boyish” or straight figures or round “O” shape figures

    Wash

Dark Denim – Will look good on everyone, especially women with thick thighs and this is the denim (sometimes called the “Rinse”) which makes the legs look longest also

Stone wash, Distressed and Vintage Washes can add bulk visually to heavier women and there is even “whiskering” detail on jeans which can draw attention to areas of the body such as thighs.  Then there is where the pockets are placed, detail or lack of detail, topstiching colour … many, many variables which is why …

As in jeans shopping your Colour and Style consultation is going to be especially for YOU.  No two people are identical.

Moana Robinson from Beauty Glow takes pride in the fact that she loves to focus on you as an individual and although the process for each consultation is similar the advice given will be personal to YOU.  Contact Beauty Glow for a session that is a fit especially for YOU.

  • Changes in Lifestyle

    Changes in Lifestyle

How Have you Changed Over the Years?

Lifestyle changes may mean you have put on  weight and/or your skin may have become dull.   It is always helpful to have the support and encouragement of someone who has your best interests at heart.  Enlisting an expert can help you cope with changes to your lifestyle.

Style and Clothing – Fashion and style can become stressful if you dont know where to start.  Here ere are a couple of tips:

    1. As you go to put something on in your wardrobe if it doesnt “rock your boat” put it aside – Your personal stylist can help you work out why it is you always bypass this item of clothing.
    2. Choose some favourite pieces and keep them in your wardrobe.   Is there a common theme with these clothes? Do they work for your current lifestyle?
    3. A personal stylist can give you ideas on how to wear those favourite clothes. They can help you work out why they are your favourites. By making changes you can feel as though you have a whole new wardrobe.
    4. Experiment with your clothes, try  some mixing and matching, try different colours, see what is trending these days and most importantly what is  comfortable and “feels right”.
    5. Even in countries where changes in seasons are not very distinct it is nice to have seasonal changes in your wardrobe – usually  bright colours in summer and more subdued, subtle colours for winter depending on your colour palette.
    6. Innerwear is as important as outerwear.  Determine your right size and have a professional fitting.  Changes to your lingerie can also make a difference to your whole look.  Just like the foundation for a house, if our foundation garments are good it creates a much better shape.

Makeup and Accessories – Makeup enhances natural beauty and is a way to express yourself. Eyeliner and/or a quality mascara and a bold lipstick that matches well with your skin tone is one way to make changes to your look.

Accessories from bags to foot wear, necklaces, bracelets and earrings help you to achieve a stylish look to go with the changes in your lifestyle.

Skincare – Not all individuals have the same type of skin, some have oily skin and others can have dry, sensitive or normal skin A product range that works for you will be individual and this is why it is good to have a range that you can “try before you buy”.  Not every range suits every person and this is a personal choice.  Ask the advice of a Beauty Therapist. Skin changes as we age and as well as skin types there are different skin conditions to cope with.   If you are trying a product out give the range at least 28 days for skincare to work as our skin renews every 28 days.

For advice on coping with style, skincare and cosmetics to go with changes in your lifestyle contact Moana Robinson from Beauty Glow.
