  • Ten Tips to Look and Feel Great As you Age

Ten Tips to Look and Feel Great As you Age

Looking and feeling the best you can for your age is the healthy way to be.   These ten tips can help with this…

    1. Mascara on the lower lashes can accentuate fine lines under the eyes and create shadows no matter how good the quality of mascara is so only apply to the top lashes.
    2. Hair too long can visually drag the face down.  This depends on the condition of your hair and face shape also.  Most of the time shoulder length or shorter hair is more flattering as you age especially if the face has thinned in shape.
    3. If your hair is coloured ask your hairdresser about the best colour to use as you age.  Softness in colour is going to be more flattering rather than harsh blondes or black/dark brown.  This will all depend on skin colour and natural hair colouring.  Contrast will be more muted as we age.
    4. Keeping healthy with adequate water intake which would be 6-8 glasses of water on average.  As we age we tend to not respond to thirst as quickly.  Healthy food with a well balanced diet including protein, fruit and vegetables.  Adequate daily exercise is important also on average at least two hours a week in total.
    5. The 3 S’s are the main factors which can age skin and our health a lot quicker – Smoking, Sun and Stress
    6. Stained or yellowed teeth.  Our teeth do usually darken with age just as hair lightens!  A good quality whitening toothpaste can help with this.  Also speak with your dentist about options.  Tooth Mousse is also a way to protect your tooth enamel from acidic or staining food and drink.
    7. Using good quality skincare.  Cleansing, toning and moisturising morning and night is really important especially as we age.   Use a specific night cream at night.  Use a day cream with SPF15+ and use a good body moisturiser every day.
    8. Too much makeup and also makeup that is too dark can add age to our faces.  Lighter and brighter rather than dark, deep colours in lipsticks especially is best.
    9. Ensure your foundation garments are the right fit and shape for your body.  Arrange to have a bra fitting if you are unsure about whether you have changed in shape as you age.  Bra straps need tightening? You may be surprised about this difference this can make.
    10. Wearing the best clothing and accessory colours for your skin, hair and eye colour will ensure that you always look glowing and fresh no matter what age you are.  Recommendation is  to have a colour analysis at least every ten years.

Best tip of all is …

Keep happy and fulfilled doing some of what you love to do every day.  Do what you love and love what you do applies for any age …

  • Six Core Needs and Our Wardrobe

Six Core Needs and Our Wardrobe

How Do these Core Needs Affect our Decision Making

At our Life Coaching Course this weekend we went into the Six Core Needs and how they affect how we make decisions.  This got me thinking about how we make our wardrobe choices.

I figured as with choosing what to eat for dinner day to day and week to week wardrobe choices can depend largely on how your core needs are balanced.

The two core needs which are more spiritual “Growth and Contribution” may affect the way we choose our clothes.  If  we want to improve our style of dressing and grow our sense of style.  Maybe constantly learning new makeup techniques and exploring tips and tricks can relate to “Growth”.  “Contribution” may change how our wardrobe is split up with the clothes that we wear when say, contributing to charity events.  Also when we are sorting our wardrobe whether we make a conscious effort to donate to charity or give to friends and family.

The core needs of “Significance” and “Connection”  may be to do with whether we like to “dress to impress” or dress to build rapport and “connection” with our peers.

The core needs of “Certainty” and  “Variety” –  depending on how those needs are weighted for an individual may determine whether they dress according to their mood at the time or whether they plan ahead.  People who like “certainty” would feel panicked if they did not have every item sorted prior to attending an important event.  They may love dressing in a uniform.  Someone who favours “variety” may love the spontaneity of  creating an outfit at short notice.  As well as a variety of clothing combinations they may like a variety of choice each day rather than have that certainty of knowing what to wear.

We all have differing levels of these core needs and there are some which are inbuilt and some which are consciously developed.

Do you like certainty or variety?  Do you like significance and to be noticed or to slip under the radar quite often?  Do you thrive on connection or prefer time alone?

I have discovered that I love the variety – wondering if you have ever worked out which core needs are most important to you?

We are all different and so much can determine how we make choices and decisions:

    • Culture
    • Genes
    • Upbringing
    • Education
    • Beliefs
    • Religion
    • Core Beliefs
    • Gender
    • Experiences
    • Financial circumstances
    • Relationships
    • Status
    • Career
    • Lifestyle

  • Avoid the Stress When Getting Dressed

Avoid the Stress When Getting Dressed

Stress When Getting Dressed can Affect Our Health, Social life and whole Day!

Would you agree?  Can you relate to this?  I have heard of at least two women who have been so stressed that they have turned down social occasions because they just knew they wouldn’t be able to decide what to wear. Imagine being able to enjoy getting dressed to go out and being able to get dressed quickly so that you can walk out the door feeling confident and showing your own style.

Before having children which was a long time ago I used to change quite a few times before going out anywhere.  I had that luxury and even if it was going to work in the morning being a true Libra Star Sign I would want everything perfect and could never make up my mind.  Once the children came along that soon changed.  Dress quick – that was it!

Now the children have grown up and I have so many other activities that I love to spend my time on again I don’t have the time or inclination to spend ages deciding what to wear.  As well as the time factor who wants all those piles of clothes to put away?  How cool to be able to look at the weather, think of the occasion you are dressing for sports, work, social, formal and then just get dressed knowing that whatever you put on will be just right for you.

You can avoid that last minute stress and piles of clothes to put away by:

    1. Knowing your most flattering colours and styles
    2. Only having in your wardrobe clothing and accessories that fit your own style recipe and colour palette
    3. Once you have your colour palette sorted you will know that your clothing is always going to be the right colour for your skintone, hair and eye colour AND look good with other accessories you own
    4. Make sure that all your clothing is a great fit for your body shape and the size that you are now.  Feeling comfortable in your clothing is important no matter what you are doing.
    5. If you have the space you can split your clothing into sections to cater for  different aspects to your life – Hobbies, Sports, Work, Meetings, Family Outings, Socialising
    6. If you are the sort of person who likes to be prepared well before an event ensure you have the outfit ready ahead of time to get dressed into.  Some people even plan their outfits for the following week no matter what their itinerary is.  I am writing about this in a subsequent post.
    7. Ensure you are getting dressed for you with regard to your own style, personality, colours and comfort however also  take  into account the occasion.
    8. Consideration for others when you dress is not about fitting in with everyone else.  It is about consciously dressing so that you can reflect who you are to the world and show respect for other people.
    9. Last but not least Number 9 – Get dressed and leave on time.  Know that you look great, you feel great and you don’t need to second guess that choice of clothing. If you are dressed as YOU, wearing YOUR colours and style, in comfortable clothing suitable for the occasion you are going to you can’t go wrong.

  • Long Haul Travel in Comfort

    Long Haul Travel in Comfort

Can you Travel in Comfort AND Style?

Comfort YES its a must!  Yes to  comfort AND style.   I class long haul as anything over 9 hours.  Sitting on a plane for a long time can be challenging.  My tips for stylish travel with comfort are as follows (especially for those 15 or 23 hour flights):

    • Keep it casual – If you are being met at the other end by a business associate “smart casual” can still be achieved by wearing co-ordinating comfortable clothes and taking a jacket for when you reach your destination.
    • To function efficiently after most long haul flights you may hopefully have allowed time to rest and change before going to your meetings
    • Leggings and tops are great for travel, layered with an easily removable shirt or jacket
    •  Garments made from  fabric which is breathable for comfort and wrinkle resistant for style such as cotton polyester blends are best
    • Cooler tops underneath are good in case there is a delay until take off and the air-conditioning can quite often fluctuate during this time
    • The outer layer (jacket/cardigan/coat) if soft is good to use as extra padding when snoozing on the plane
    • Shoes need to be comfortable for standing in queues at customs and easily removable.  Make sure they are not shoes that will not “give” if your feet tend to swell during a flight
    • Moisturisers and lip balms are a great idea and the least amount of makeup possible.   The airconditioning on planes is exremely drying.  Your skin needs hydration.  Arbonne Regenerating Toner is a good spray mist during long flights. Arbonne Rejuvenating Cream with its emollient properties is great as a moisturiser on top to combat that drying air.
    • Keep jewellery simple.  Scarves are great for a bit of colour  and – again for comfort.  Bulky beads and earrings are not good for napping in.  Bangles in gold or silver or other materials such as plastic or natural are best.  It is a hassle taking metallic jewellery off when going through the metal detectors.
    • Take a pair of socks on the plane to change into
    • Lots of meals come to you on the long flights and it is best to try to avoid the carbs, sugars and alcohol if you suffer after long flights.  The airlines are really good lately about constantly offering water and it is always good to take advantage of this – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
    • Think about colours you wear on the plane –  No matter how clean the plane is 400+ people onboard each  747 flight and 800+ on an A380  in such a confined space light colours are just not practical
    • Neutrals are best anyway for travelling for space economy and mixing and matching – For ideas on packing for travel see the article on No Stress Travelling in Style
    • As a hint for any spills or marks soda water is good for spot removals
    • Keep your hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, lipstick, mini spray deodorant and purse sized handcream handy for a freshen up before landing (Remember any gloss or toothpaste or other liquids or gels will need to be under 100ml)
    • Economy Comfort:  If you are lucky enough to travel Business or First Class the lie back seats are wonderful.  A comfort tip for Economy is to always have a sturdy bag that  can stow under the seat in front and  pull it out during a long flight to use as a footrest.

All the best for your trip whether for business or pleasure or both – Happy travels in comfort AND style!

  • What Will You Wear to Your Next Job Interview?

What Will You Wear to Your Next Job Interview?

You Really DO Need to Dress to Impress

A job interview is one of those occasions when you will want to put a lot of effort into how you present yourself.  Dress appropriately for the position you are going for and this will give you a head start to create that all important first impression.

Here are a few tips to ensure you are going to look good and feel good for your interview.  Use this as a guideline to ensure you have thought of everything when it comes to presentation.

    • Dress conservatively.  You can still show your personality by wearing colours that suit you
    • Concentrate mainly on neutrals with splashes of your good colours  in ties, shirts, shoes, belts, jewellery
    • Wearing a suit to an interview is a safe option.  A dark coloured suit with a light coloured shirt is a good combination
    • You are  always best, especially at a first interview,  to dress up (in a professional sense) rather than dress down.
    • Classic suit styles are best with co-ordinating socks and dress shoes for men
    • Your suit or outfit should be comfortable and fit you well – See The Perfect Fit for Garments
    • Avoid loud colours and super bright ties
    • Clothing should be neat, clean and pressed.
    • Avoid anything that is  bright, sheer or showing too much flesh/cleavage
    •  Skirts shouldn’t be too short – knee length is best
    • Another good rule of thumb is to dress as though you are your boss
    • Be careful with perfumes, colognes/aftershave as you don’t want it to be overpowering or cause an allergic reaction.
    • Be particular with hygiene –  showering, shaving, teeth brushed and don’t smoke or eat just before an interview
    • Hair clean and tidy
    • Men with moustaches or beards ensure they are neatly trimmed
    • Keep jewellery simple
    • Shoes polished, medium heels and ensure they aren’t scuffed or in need of repair
    • Court shoes or pumps for women are the best option
    • Hosiery without any snags or ladders and in neutral colours.  Have a spare pair just in case
    • Nails clean and tidy – avoid artistic manicures if you are going for a professional job.  These can look great and as with all expressions of personal style are fun and a great way to show your personality.  For a job interview neutral nails will always going to be the most suitable look.
    • Makeup understated and suited to your colouring.  If you are not sure of what sort of makeup to wear for an interview book a consultation with your makeup artist or stylist who can show you the best foundation colours to suit your skintone.  Makeup for the professional workplace should be minimal and flattering.

If you take the time to attend to these details and check everything off you will feel well put together and more confident about the interview .. There is just one last thing to remember before you walk out that door …

  • Inside Out

    Inside Out

    … Or Outside In

I am reading a great  book on personal style at the moment by Carla Mason Mathis and Helen Villa Connor which is  also as they describe it .. “a natural guidebook to self-acceptance”.

“…its impossible to build a true individual style without learning to love yourself on the outside as well as the inside” (quote from the book “The Triumph of Individual Style“)

One of the latest movies Inside Out – an animated movie dealing with feelings is just one of the examples of how many people today are focusing on how we feel, how we take care of our emotions and think about situations.  I believe this is so important and it is wonderful that we are encouraged to be more open about  how we feel.

As with everything in life, balance is something that creates harmony.  The balance of looking after ourselves on the inside AND the outside makes sense.

We can look at this both ways – being the best we can from the outside in and  from the inside out.

Taking care of how we think and our self-talk is going to have a positive impact on how we feel.  This will show in our outer appearance.  Our eyes shine, we smile more, our language that comes out of our mouth will be more positive and inspiring  for other people to hear.  If we take care of our inner health, think about what we put into our bodies and exercise we will feel better, have healthier skin, eyes, hair and physiques which shows on the outside.

If we pay attention to our skin with our grooming – a good skincare routine, quality makeup plus wear good clothing styles for our body shape, wear colours that suit us and are in harmony with our skintone, hair and eyes we will feel good on the inside …

    • We know that we look good, so we feel good
    • We feel congruent with our personality by wearing colours that we like and styles that suit
    • We feel peaceful because we are comfortable in our clothes and not always worrying that a skirt or trousers are too tight, too loose or uncomfortable
    • We will receive compliments instead of people asking if we are tired or not well (which can happen if you are wearing the wrong colours for you personally)
    • We are able to concentrate on whatever activity we are doing at the time because we know the “outside” is taken care of
    • We can feel excitement about an impending trip or event because we know that we can put together outfits from our wardrobe that will be work for us

So … Outside In or Inside Out  … It all works.  If we look good, we feel good and if we feel good we look good… BALANCE and HARMONY.

  • Using Your Colour Swatch

    Using Your Colour Swatch

Explore and Discover Your Colour Options

Wow what fun you can have using your colour swatch!  I recently pulled out a dress that I hadnt worn simply because I was not used to wearing those colours and kept bypassing it.   I took a good look at the dress with my colour swatch and realised Yes! it is in my colour swatch and it does look good on me – even more so with a bit of red lipstick. This neutral is a great alternative to black.

Do you find that you are wearing a lot of the same colour all the time?  Try exploring the colours in your swatch.  There may be colours in your colour swatch that you had not even thought of wearing Be adventurous now that you have had a colour consultation and have your colour swatch.  Remember your colour swatch is a tool and a guide that can save your hundreds of dollars.

Take your swatch to your wardrobe or with you to the shops and ask yourself …

    • Does the colour of the garment blend in with the swatch?
    • Is it the same level of lightness or darkness?
    • Is it warm or is it cool?
    • Is it clear or muted compared to the swatch?
    • If you fan the swatch out do all the rest of the colours in the swatch kind of “go” with the colour in the garment you are looking at?

Your wardrobe will be so much more  versatile with the ability to mix and match if you use your swatch.  Try the following to “tweak” your wardrobe using your colour swatch

    • Try finding colours of similar  colour value and wearing them together such as a light pink with a light blue or a a medium yellow with a medium purple; or you could try putting a few of the richer colours in your swatch together   If they are in your swatch each colour will be right for you.  You can be confident of this.
    • Try putting one of your signature colours (which will be marked on your swatch) in a garment which will be worn near your face with a nice dark neutral – the darkest in your swatch as this will really highlight your face and make the signature colour stand out.

Have fun and discover some new ideas by using your swatch.  By using YOUR colour swatch you  know that you cant go wrong.

Contact Moana Robinson of Beauty Glow to find out your colour palette . A full Colour consultation takes 1.5 to 2 hours and you receive

  • Changes in Lifestyle

    Changes in Lifestyle

How Have you Changed Over the Years?

Lifestyle changes may mean you have put on  weight and/or your skin may have become dull.   It is always helpful to have the support and encouragement of someone who has your best interests at heart.  Enlisting an expert can help you cope with changes to your lifestyle.

Style and Clothing – Fashion and style can become stressful if you dont know where to start.  Here ere are a couple of tips:

    1. As you go to put something on in your wardrobe if it doesnt “rock your boat” put it aside – Your personal stylist can help you work out why it is you always bypass this item of clothing.
    2. Choose some favourite pieces and keep them in your wardrobe.   Is there a common theme with these clothes? Do they work for your current lifestyle?
    3. A personal stylist can give you ideas on how to wear those favourite clothes. They can help you work out why they are your favourites. By making changes you can feel as though you have a whole new wardrobe.
    4. Experiment with your clothes, try  some mixing and matching, try different colours, see what is trending these days and most importantly what is  comfortable and “feels right”.
    5. Even in countries where changes in seasons are not very distinct it is nice to have seasonal changes in your wardrobe – usually  bright colours in summer and more subdued, subtle colours for winter depending on your colour palette.
    6. Innerwear is as important as outerwear.  Determine your right size and have a professional fitting.  Changes to your lingerie can also make a difference to your whole look.  Just like the foundation for a house, if our foundation garments are good it creates a much better shape.

Makeup and Accessories – Makeup enhances natural beauty and is a way to express yourself. Eyeliner and/or a quality mascara and a bold lipstick that matches well with your skin tone is one way to make changes to your look.

Accessories from bags to foot wear, necklaces, bracelets and earrings help you to achieve a stylish look to go with the changes in your lifestyle.

Skincare – Not all individuals have the same type of skin, some have oily skin and others can have dry, sensitive or normal skin A product range that works for you will be individual and this is why it is good to have a range that you can “try before you buy”.  Not every range suits every person and this is a personal choice.  Ask the advice of a Beauty Therapist. Skin changes as we age and as well as skin types there are different skin conditions to cope with.   If you are trying a product out give the range at least 28 days for skincare to work as our skin renews every 28 days.

For advice on coping with style, skincare and cosmetics to go with changes in your lifestyle contact Moana Robinson from Beauty Glow.

  • Lipstick On The Go

    Lipstick On The Go

    Lipstick and Lip Gloss

Lipstick and or Lip Gloss can make a huge difference to how you look and feel.

Whether you prefer lipstick or lip gloss here are a few tips to help you with fast, easy application:

    1. If you are applying lipstick straight from the stick start at the centre of your bottom lip as this is the widest part of your mouth so its hard to go wrong here – blend towards the corners.
    2. If you want to really get the cupids bow exact start with your lipliner by marking a little cross in the cupids bow and keep within these lines
    3. For a long lasting matte finish blot your lips with a tissue after first lipstick application to remove excess colour and re-apply a couple of times
    4. For the gloss “kiss” test try on the back of your hand.  Quality longer lasting lip gloss will not leave too much of a mark.
    5. Remember to check for stray lippy on teeth by running your tongue over your teeth (a good friend or partner will let you know if you have forgotten to do this)
    6. Applying lipstick or gloss without a mirror?  We all have friends who are great at this! With a bit of practice it can be done – avoid using very dark colours if attempting this.  If you can apply lipliner at home around the lip edge and then fill in this also it is a good base.  Then while out apply lipstick or lip gloss to the middle of the lips and blend outwards with your little finger.
    7. Cant find your purse mirror but need to use one?  reverse your camera on your phone – I have seen an elderly woman do this while out and was very impressed.
    8. Have a lipstick colour for different seasons and outfits but ensure they are in your colour palette.  Lip glosses can be used to tone down or soften lipstick which may be darker than you would like.  Lip glosses also add that touch of glamour if you are going from daytime to night time makeup on the go.
    9. Not sure of your palette?  Part of the Colour Consultation at Beauty Glow is a Five Minute Face Makeup where the colours including lipstick are all written down for you.
    10. It is fun to attend a workshop such as a Beauty Glow Makeup Class or Sassy Circle Workshop where you have a whole selection of lipsticks and lip glosses to try.

Remember to keep in mind the rest of your makeup when applying lipstick and to focus on emphasising the eyes OR the lips as too much makeup on both can detract from your natural beauty instead of enhancing it.  Have fun and try some colours you may not have worn before.  You will soon see what suits you and what doesnt.  Lipsticks in particular are dependent on whether your colouring is light or dark, warm or cool and other factors.

To find out more contact Moana Robinson at Beauty Glow or enquire about the Sassy Circle Workshops

  • Winner of our Style Day Competition

Winner of our Style Day Competition

Taking Time Out Especially for YOU

We had an amazing day with the Winner of our “Style Day Especially for YOU” Competition.  Lyndi MacRae rose to the challenge and sent in a video to the Beauty Glow Facebook Page and shared her reasons for wanting to win the competition.  In these busy times it is too easy to put ourselves on the back burner and right at the end of our list.  The aim of this competition was to …

    (1) Encourage people to really step out of their comfort zone and feel that joy of achieving something they are not used to doing

    (2) Take a whole day to explore what is possible – see themselves in a different light and step away from the “busy-ness” of life for a day.  Lyndi understands the value of investment in time like this.

It was a busy full on day but during the time Lyndi had …

    1. Full Colour Analysis with regard to clothing and accessories
    2. Discussion of lifestyle and wardrobe functionality
    3. Body shape discussion and ideas of clothing that would suit body shape plus lifestyle and style personality
    4. Makeup application and tips were given on how to apply the makeup
    5. Shopping trip to look at some outfits and ideas which suited Lyndi’s body shape and colouring – clothes bought were neutrals as a good base to add colours from her swatch
    6. Visit to a shoe store for some quality comfortable shoes with style  suitable for various occasions including business engagements
    7. Visit to the hairdresser to colour, conditioning treatment and trim with attention on future management of hair for optimum hair health for the style she wished to have
    8. Photo session afterwards from Sumico so that Lyndi could see the transformation and share her special style day
    9.  total $2.070 in value including vouchers for clothing, shoes, hairstyling, Photography Session Gift Certificate, PR Session with a publicity expert and a Naturopathic Health Assessment

The benefits of reaching out and then accepting what is offered are sometimes not realised until quite some time afterwards.  Conversations during the day, questions asked and information provided combined with a full on day of Colour and Style Analysis, shopping and hair appointment – not to mention having photos taken and trying on different outfits – all took Lyndi far away from what she usually does in a day.

How refreshing though to do something that you do not usually do?

How rejuvenating to think of a different way to dress or accessorise?

Sometimes it is those little tweaks or wearing the right colours to bring out the beautiful blue in the eyes or  lovely natural skin.  Congratulations to Lyndi MacRae on stepping up and entering the competition.  There had to be a personal challenge as the prize really was amazing.  Taking on that challenge and creating the video is a reward in itself –  Lyndi absolutely blossomed in those hours achieved through her own volition and willingness to learn more about herself .  There are endless possibilities to be achieved when you gain confidence and renewed vitality by taking some time out especially for YOU.

Contributors to the Style Day Competition were Moana Robinson from Beauty Glow, Sumico Web & Graphic Design, Passion 4 Health  Hair Design by Lou, Designs to Cherish, The White House Fashions, Sole Sister Shoes, Publicity Genie AND Lyndi MacRae – the “Unstick Chick” (look her up – Lyndi is all about making the “invisible visible”  and is currently working on some great tutorials; Lyndi has marketing solutions to  help Entrepreneurs develop a quality user experience)
